Play Any Games on Android using Chainfire 3D

Aaronb 0 Comment December 1, 2011

Android is a great mobile OS but since manufacturers can use any type of hardware games and apps compatibility can be an issue. You might for example want to play a Tegra2 only game like on a non-Tegra2 device. If you do so you may end up with white textures and other issues. That’s before using Chainfire 3D which solves all those issues, Chainfire 3D is a must have for rooted Android devices (phones or tablets).

Disclaimer: Please note that we will not be responsible if you end up bricking your device. Rooting or customizing your device can be risky, follow the instructions at your own risk.

Chainfire 3D is “an intermediary OpenGL driver. What does that mean? It means that Chainfire3D sits between your apps and the graphics drivers, and can intercept and/or change commands between the two. It has some built-in functions, and can be further extended with plugins to provide extra functionality.” (from Android Market).
You will need to root / jailbreak your Android device prior to using Chainfire 3D. You can get a better idea of how to install and use Chainfire 3D by watching a YouTube tutorial as well.

You can find more information about Chainfire 3D on XDA @ Chainfire3D [ROOT][OpenGL ES 2.0+].

Chainfire 3D can be installed from the Android Market, it comes in 2 versions: Free or Pro ($3.99).

Plugins to emulate PowerVR, NVidia or Qualcomm GPUs can be found on Google and then installed in Chainfire 3D. This driver does require a powerful device and in our tests it did perform very well on various devices.

Improve Google Maps on WebOS – How To

Aaronb 0 Comment June 5, 2011

WebOS isn’t getting much love these days even with the newly released HP Veer, time will tell if WebOS can remain a viable player in the smartphone market. Luckily there are still many folks out there who care about WebOS and find workarounds which make devices like the Palm Pre 2 or HP Veer better. rmausser @ PreCentral found a way to get an improved version of Google Maps running on any WebOS device.

This hack / workaround uses Google Maps Mobile site not the native Google Maps app, it has some performance issues but it is better looking.

Follow these instructions to get a better looking version of Google Maps on your WebOS device:

  1. On your computer go to Google Maps, make sure you’re logged into your Gmail account
  2. Go to any location and save it to a map: click on Save to map and add it to My Saved Places
  3. Once the location is saved, create a link to it using the Link button at the top right of the Google Maps map
  4. On your WebOS device, log into the same Gmail account
Paste the link into your browser and enjoy. A better way of doing it would be to send the Maps link to your Gmail account and then click on the link in the email to open Google Maps in the WebOS browser
  5. Once the map is up, add it to your launcher using Menu > Page > Add to launcherYou can get more information @http://forums.precentral.net/webos-patches/282932-improved-google-maps.html#post2974760.
